Postcard of the 1912 Boston Red Sox and a crowd celebrating their World Series victory, Boston, Mass., 1912

PC001.02.03.TMP.044 (RS18216)

Description

This postcard is a composite of two images. The scene occupying the left and top center portions of the postcard shows a large crowd celebrating the Red Sox 1912 World Series victory over the New York Giants. A car with a group of men, including Mayor John Francis "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, leads the crowd. A group portrait of the 1912 Boston Red Sox team occupies the right and lower center portions of the postcard. The team is arranged in front of their dugout along the first base line, with a view of the grandstands in the background. There are three insets: a ballboy, manager-first baseman Jake Stahl, and pinch hitter Clyde Engle. In the bottom of the tenth inning of the deciding game with the Giants ahead by one, Engle hit a routine fly ball, but Giants center fielder Fred Snodgrass muffed the play. Engle scored the tying run, leading the way to the Red Sox winning the championship.
