Edward Henry Little papers

Series XII. Papers of Edward Henry Little (1819-1877), 1825-1877, undated, includes letters, account books, receipts, legal documents, and miscellaneous materials document his farming operations through lists of milk sold to various customers, fees received from lending out an Ayrshire Bull, accounts of thousands of bushels of onions sold, bills for farm equipment, horse-shoeing fees and so on. Included in his public service papers is evidence that Edward H. Little held just about every office in the Town of Newbury, including Selectman, Overseer of the Poor, and Assessor. The series is arranged in eight subseries according to material type.

Historical/Biographical Note

Edward Henry Little was born in 1819 and died in 1877. He married Catherine Adams Little (1823-1922). Mr. Little was a very successful farmer and a man of much ability, owned the best farm in Newbury, was prominent in town affairs, a director in Newburyport First National bank, and trustee of the Savings Bank and the Essex Agricultural Society. Edward Henry Little was not just a farmer and public servant. He was a real estate investor, mortgage lender, bank officer and part owner in the 1870s of the ship Exporter. His obituary (Newburyport Herald, March 1, 1877) noted that he was "a man of good judgment, liberal towards the poor, and in a different sense of the word liberal in politics and in religion."
