Centennial Acquisitions Exhibiton, October 22nd-23rd, 30th-31st, 2010:<br/> Artist Thomas Sully revived a flagging career in 1820 by painting an informal portrait of his son and selling it for twice his usual fee. Before long Sully was known for his naturalistic paintings of children. This example portrays the five-year-old Alfred Langdon-Elwyn, Jr., grandson of James Mease, the subject of Sully’s painting hung over the sideboard in the Langdon dining room.
