Halliday Historic Photograph Company photographic collection, 1890s-1930s

PC027 (RS81331)

Description

There are over 3,000 original negatives in the Halliday Historic Photograph Company Photographic Collection, most with corresponding original prints. Supplementary information about the dates of individual photographs is available from a small collection of the firm's published catalogues (located in Documentary box: Photography and Photographers).

The majority of the photographs are of Massachusetts towns and buildings that fit the criterion of historic. There are virtually no views of commercial blocks, late-nineteenth century buildings, or industrial developments.

Historical/Biographical Note

The Halliday Historic Photograph Company was a Boston firm specializing in the commercial sale of architectural and scenic views whose emphasis is primarily on buildings and sites of picturesque or associational interest as relics of New England's Colonial past. Active from the 1890s until the 1930s, the quality of the firm's work was unusually high, both pictorially and for its documentary dependability.
