Watercolor

1916.146 (RS159281)

Description

This watercolor on paper landscape depicts a pastoral scene, with cattle drinking from a stream in foreground. On the right is a manor or castle with arches and windows. A man leads a donkey out of the undergrowth towards the stream. Other people are on a road in the distance, walking away from the manor. The painting is bold and distinctive, with naive treatment of perspective and shading. The painting is most likely based on an engraved print copy of an as-yet unidentified landscape, possibly French or English, originally thought to be Lorrain's "Arch of Titus" but it bears little similarity to that work.
