Abstract
Thomas Dawes' Brattle Square church, built in 1772, provided inspiration for other meetinghouses and churches. Its design combined elements of the traditional square New England meetinghouse with the longitudinal Anglican church of the 18th century. Frederic C. Detwiller argues that the significance of Dawes' long-destroyed church has been overlooked.
