Abstract
John Francis was a shrewd businessman who, with John Brown, was part owner of Hope Furnace, an iron-smelting operation. In September 1790, Francis made a journey to Winchester, N.H., to find Daniel Cahoone, the "New Furnace" smelting operator. A portion of Francis' diary, which records the journey, is reprinted here.
