Abstract
The story of Oliver Evans' automated flour mill design is twisty and thorny. While Evans is recognized as one of the most important inventors of his time, and his impact on agriculture in New England is immeasurable, he let the design for the flour mill slip through his hands, as a published version provided many mechanics with a blueprint for their own mills.
