Miniature watercolor on ivory, bust length portrait of a man facing slightly right and wearing a naval uniform, set in a molded oval ormolu frame with pendant loop at top and mounted in an album page.

"Samuel Thwing. Brother of Supply Clap Thwing. Miniature by artist / unknown. He was born in Boston September 16, 1796. / A midshipman in 1814, and fought in the Battle of Lake / Champlain with so much gallantry that Congress presented / him with a sword. Some letters relating to his service, / and a button in a frame that was on his coat. He died / in 1818 of typhoid fever contracted in the war." (Paper label)
