Painted gold stickpin with round head decorated with an enameled depiction of the winged lion of St. Mark.
The Latin text on the lion's tablet reads "Pax tibi, Marce, Evangelista meus" or "Peace be upon you, O Mark, my Evangelist." Venetian legend holds that Mark was approached by an angel who greeted him with those words as he entered the area that would become Venice.
