Floorcloth for Quincy
Re-creating a c. 1860 floorcloth

Conservator and decorative painter Marylou Davis and intern Margaret Kean are re-creating a c. 1860 canvas floorcloth at Historic New England’s facility in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Work on the ten-by-forty-foot canvas will take approximately three weeks to complete. Right now, each step forward is a dramatic change. As you can see from the photographs, the initial phase of the design is done and details are being stenciled in to match the complete pattern on the right.

The floorcloth, part of a three-year interior restoration project at Quincy House, will be installed in the downstairs hallway in time for our Open House in June.
