Museum of Fine Arts exhibits sampler from Historic New England’s collection
November 22, 2010
Now that the new Art of the Americas wing has opened at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, visitors can see an alphabet sampler on loan from Historic New England. Sarah Hill made the sampler in 1737 at the age of twelve. It is an excellent example of a Boston sampler featuring geometric patterns, stylized flowers, urns, birds, and a tree along with multiple executions of the alphabet.
The exhibition, Colonial Embroidery of Boston: Samplers, Pictures, and Domestic Textiles, opened to the public on November 20.
