May is Preservation Month

May 11, 2016

 Leading Locally

May is Preservation Month, and this year it coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act in 1966. This federal statute established the regulatory framework for the activities of historic preservation.

Its passage signaled that preservation had matured as a focus of public policy. It paved the way for recognition of historic preservation as a field of professional endeavor, not just an avocational pursuit.

Interested in preserving the architectural assets in your community? Historic New England, the Massachusetts Historical Commission, and other professionals offer two upcoming workshops focusing on preservation at the local level.
