Importance of historic interiors highlighted in Period Homes Magazine
June 14, 2013
Jess Phelps, team leader for preservation services at Historic New England, discusses the importance of protecting historically significant interior features in the latest issue of Period Homes Magazine. Jess observes the growing trend of home buyers “continuing the lamentable practice of purchasing historic properties and remaining generally respectful to the exterior façades while completely reworking the interior.” He goes on to discuss the value of preservation easements, such as those held by Historic New England’s Stewardship Easement Program, as a tool for protecting interior spaces.
“With regard to interior protections, an easement holder should not seek to freeze a house in time, but rather allow it to sensitively and appropriately adapt, subject to review and input, to contemporary living,” he states.
