At Here by the Sea

Andrew Merton and Gail Kelley of Durham, New Hampshire, look forward to the end of October when they get to bring home their recent purchase, “Skye Shards II (circles)," an original work by Rochester, New Hampshire, artist Sherry Palmer.

The work is one of two by Palmer on display at Historic New England’s Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center in South Berwick, Maine. They are part of the exhibition Here by the Sea: Contemporary Art of the Piscataqua, which contains thirty-eight works by area artists and is on view until October 12.

Merton and Kelley attended the opening reception for Here by the Sea in May and were “particularly pleased with the direction Sherry has taken with the shards paintings.” They were taken with the shadows, colors, and theme of the designs in this work. “Everything about it was just right,” said Kelley.

Historic New England is pleased to be a part of the creative economy of the Seacoast. Regarding the new gallery and the contemporary art exhibition, Kelley was “pleased that local artists are getting the recognition.”

Palmer, an active member of Historic New England said, “It is an honor to be part of the inaugural exhibition. I also think Sarah [Orne Jewett] would be honored that Historic New England is using her property to promote the arts in her part of the world…creating this new venue for sharing local talent, from paintings to film. Bravo to Historic New England for their work in South Berwick.”
