Rhode Island Foundation supports Project CHICK

September 23, 2011

Chickens at Casey Farm
Project CHICK, one of the educational programs at Casey Farm, is supported by funding from the Rhode Island Foundation.

Historic New England received a grant of $9,500 from the Rhode Island Foundation’s Program for Animal Welfare to support the protection of our flock of Dominique chickens raised at Casey Farm in Saunderstown, Rhode Island. These chickens are the cornerstone of our highly successful educational program, Project CHICK, which brings eggs and incubators to the classrooms so that students can learn about the life cycle of birds by watching the chicks hatch and grow over three weeks. The chickens then return to Casey Farm where students learn about sustainable agriculture and the humane treatment of farm animals.

The grant also includes funds to bring this unique learning experience to under-served Rhode Island youth through field trips to Casey Farm. Since 1999, support from the Rhode Island Foundation has been critical to the success of Project CHICK, and has a tremendous impact on our ability to offer high quality and in-depth curriculum-based programs to Rhode Island students. The Rhode Island Foundation is the state's community foundation.

Chick Project

I am a kindergarten teacher at Lincoln School in Providence, RI and would love to participate in the CHICK project. We will be studying farms in the spring with a focus on farm animals in NE. We are looking forward to a field trip to your farm with Kindergarten and 1st grade. How do we go about participating in the CHICK project?

Many thanks, Julie Savage
