Boy Scout Troop 36 from Moosup, Connecticut, camped at Roseland Cottage for two nights to explore Civil War history. From August 5 to 7, a dozen members of the troop participated in Rally ‘Round the Flag, a Connecticut School and Youth program.
The Scouts formed a company, marched, and drilled; learned about medical practices and the treatment of wounded soldiers; constructed a one-quarter scale pontoon bridge; practiced the artillery drill; and learned to send encoded messages with signal flags. Several ambitious Scouts attempted to make hard tack. When queried by their leader, all of the boys gave the weekend an “enthusiastic thumbs-up.”
