Historic New England helps document Rhode Island furniture
The Yale University Art Gallery recently launched the Rhode Island Furniture Archive, the first comprehensive online database of Rhode Island-made furniture.
“The Rhode Island Furniture Archive...documents furniture and furniture making in Rhode Island from the time of the first European colonization in 1636 through the early nineteenth century," according to the Yale University Art Gallery. "Bringing together records of surviving furniture, individuals who owned it, and known furniture makers, this archive aims to provide a complete account of the specific culture, local variations, and artistic practices surrounding the first two centuries of furniture making in Rhode Island.”
With many pieces in our collection that were made or used in Rhode Island, Historic New England is proud to participate in the project. Thirteen chairs, chests of drawers, and desks from the Historic New England collection are currently highlighted on the website.
