Elementary school students "hike through history"

Students visit Jewett House

On May 13, 293 elementary school students and their teachers from South Berwick Central School visited the Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick, Maine, as part of the school's annual Hike Through History. The hike is a unique event in which students learn about local history by hiking from place to place in the historic downtown.

This year's hike theme focused on occupations. At the Jewett House, students learned that Sarah Orne Jewett was an author and avid letter writer. Students tried their hand at writing with quill pens and ink. One student said, "This is the coolest thing we did all day!"
