Carpentry crew at work on Codman Estate woodshed
![]()
The construction techniques used to build the 1908 Codman Estate woodshed present a unique challenge for Historic New England's carpentry crew. The woodshed's blend of traditional (heavy timber) and modern (balloon) frame construction is unusual, but not unheard of in New England. According to New Hampshire State Architectural Historian James L. Garvin’s A Building History of Northern New England, some New England carpenters resisted the wholesale change to balloon framing well into the twentieth century, employing traditional joinery of large timbers for corner posts, plates, and girts while using smaller sawn members for wall studs and window openings.
The carpentry crew documented recent repairs to the woodshed in this photo gallery.
