Roof work begins at Winslow Crocker House

: Scaffolding is being set up at the Winslow Crocker House in anticipation for roof work.

Originally installed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Western Red Cedar roofs at the Winslow Crocker House and its surrounding buildings need replacement. With an average lifespan of thirty years for wood roofs, this site-wide roof replacement project has arrived at the perfect time.

After receiving a Community Preservation Act grant from the Town of Yarmouth and support from our Preservation Maintenance Fund, we are able to replace the roofs of four structures at the site: Winslow Crocker House and Garage and the Thacher House and Barn. The project is expected to continue into October.

The Winslow Crocker roof displays unique coastal characteristics often found on seventeenth and eighteenth-century Cape Cod buildings. The roofline bows slightly at the gable ends, a feature typically attributed to the number of shipbuilders turned housewrights in the area. Visit the site for yourself to see this uniquely New England architectural detail and check out the roof work as we progress.
